Erwan SOURTY is an Electron Microscopist and Business Leader, currently Global Director, Application Scientists, for the Materials and Structural Analysis Division at Thermo Fisher Scientific. Based in China since 2008, serving as an application scientist, he has significantly contributed to the deployment in China of aberration-corrected electron microscopy, the most powerful and versatile microscope there is, and only existing instrument capable of characterizing with sub-atomic resolution, the structure and composition of various materials, structural (e.g., alloys) or functional (e.g., semiconductors), organic (e.g., proteins) or inorganic (e.g., ceramics). Supporting the installation of the first aberration-corrected electron microscope (Titan) at Tsinghua University in 2008, from testing, to technical acceptance, to training operators, he has subsequently supported the installation of tens of other instruments all over China. About 200 such instruments are nowadays available to Chinese scientists and engineers, allowing breakthrough discoveries and highly innovative R&D in the field of life sciences, medicine, semiconductors, space and aeronautics, advanced materials, etc. Has also opened 3 applications laboratories, in 2008, 2014, then 2020, allowing Chinese scientists to get access to the most advanced electron microscopy instrumentation available on the market. He has also built a team of world-top experts in the field (from 4 application scientists in 2008, to more that 60 today) providing yearly more than 2000 days of training and running more than 2500 days of sample work.Erwan SOURTY has delivered hundreds of keynote presentations at various scientific meetings and conferences in China, helping to popularize electron microscopy techniques and educate Chinese scientists.
